Art History Reading Group Week 8

This week, we meet on Tuesday at the gallery to talk about Realism, an approach in art toward ordinary subject matter. Realism takes place during the Second Republic, one of the many abrupt periods in an unstable 19th-century France. The Salons of 1848 and 1850 overhauled its previous juries of academicians and the result was the inclusion of Realist artworks. We have a supplementary text on Courbet’s self-portraits.

And this week, we will also include a reading of Sedrick Chisom’s thoughtful and generous interview with the Brooklyn Rail ahead of his upcoming solo show in New York. Chisom weaves history into a post-apocalyptic scenario that is the subject of his body of work.
